How B2B software brands show up in AI search

AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI answers do not return ten blue links. They synthesise an answer and cite a handful of sources — typically two to seven. To win, your brand has to be one of those cited sources. That is a different game from traditional SEO, and most B2B software websites are built to lose it. Here is how to show up.
Retrieval-based engines judge a page largely on its opening. If your page builds slowly to a conclusion, it gets passed over. Lead with a direct, complete answer to the question a real person would type, then expand. Write the way someone actually asks — full questions, plain language — because that is what the engine is matching against.
Citation priority decays. Pages without freshness signals lose standing in a matter of weeks. Maintain the content that matters, show when it was updated, and revisit it on a regular cadence. AI search rewards content that is current, factual, and structured — which, not coincidentally, is also what makes a page genuinely useful to a human.
